Make Your Hair Color Last
By D'etta Brown
Yesterday, you wanted a new you - a new 'do. One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to accomplish this is boxed hair dye. Boxed dyes come in permanent, semi-permanent and temporary. I recommend the semi-permanent, because your grown-out roots aren't as noticeable as with permanent dye. Still, it's always frustrating to watch your beautiful new hair color go down the drain with every shampoo. One way to make sure your color lasts as long as possible is to choose a shade darker than your natural color. Your hair fibers will grab the color and hold it in longer, which means more shampoos are necessary to wash it out. Make sure when you do shampoo, you always use color-safe shampoo and conditioner. Whatever your favorite brand of shampoo, they more than likely make at least one type of shampoo and conditioner specifically for color-treated hair. Some companies, like John Frieda and Pantene, even make color-safe shampoos for specific colors: blonde, brunette or red (and small variations in each hue). Now that you're armed with the correct shampoo, consider only lathering once. Your hair will come out just as clean, and you'll lose less dye (and save more shampoo and money). To keep your hair shiny and healthy, go at least one day between shampoos, or you'll risk drying out the cuticle. Most dye kits also come with a deep conditioner that should be used once a week. Try to remember to use it; it will help your color maintain its luster. |
